Day 3

Helloooooooo world! 4:30 a.m. was our glorious wake up time this morning as we headed out of Louisiana and drove towards Texas… so last night’s sleep was basically just a nap! As we loaded the bus, we were greeted with Scottish music from our counselors, gotta love bagpipes! Many of us are learning to appreciate bus naps and took advantage of our early morning trek.

The first place we stopped today was a rest stop in Louisiana. To wake us up to get off of the bus, our counselors played a very audible train noise and a song titled Dead Puppies… We quickly made a bathroom break and hopped back on the bus for breakfast. Our fabulous cooks provided a breakfast of two mini doughnuts and half of a banana with fruit punch KoolAid! After breakfast, we continued a quiet journey while most of us slept.  Many of us wrote letters and postcards home during our drive today.  Tristan Brock even wrote a love letter to our counselor Hannah.

The Miss America van decided to spice up their long journey by screaming BRIDGE every time we went under a bridge… and there were a loooot of bridges! After a while we stopped at a flying J and Denny’s combination to gas up the busses. We also dropped all of our mail into a post box so be looking out for mail, parents!! It will take a little while to get all the way back to the Carolinas!

After loading back up, we all began to make friendship bracelets, thanks to Counselor Jon’s purchase of colorful string! Most of us got involved and now are sporting colorful string around our wrists, ah friendship!! Some people on the bus today even made Mr. G a friendship bracelet!!

Aubrie Miller, Carly Kurtiak, Alicia Hutchins and Lillian Sumner!

Bryce Curtis and Nate Craven at the Riverwalk!
After one more stop at a Flying J, we began the last leg of our trip to San Antonio. The cooks gave us our best lunch yet; we had chicken ceaser wraps with applesauce. Such a nice break from sandwiches!!! After over ten hours we finally arrived in San Antonio! WOW what a long drive! We hopped off of the busses and into the Alamo where we got to explore for about an hour.  Many of us were shocked to see the Sheriffs walking around with cowboy hats, a true Texas deputy!!

Brogan Brown and Leah Mosher LOVE the Flying J!

In Texas, even the Texan flag is bigger.......actually the same size as the American flag! They were EVERY WHERE!

THE ALAMO!!!!!!!!!

A surprise visit from Guy Fieri spiced up the middle of our day!!!! Can you believe we aren’t even in California yet and we have already seen someone famous!!! Also, if you aren’t familiar with Guy, he is the super enthusiastic foodie with lots of tattoos and bleached spiked hair!! Everyone recognized him!!  We are speculating as to why he was in Texas and at the Alamo, of all places. There were some cameras and he was speaking with both of his sons beside him (we think)!!! SO COOL!!! OMG here are some pictures below that some of us got before we were directed off the sidewalk!

LOOK ITS GUY FIERI!!!!!!!

After we finished up at the Alamo we heard some more presentations. Kristina Vaher taught us all about the state of Texas, Olivia Kafer did hers on Alamo, Sarah Royster taught us about the River Walk, and Lillie Griffin did hers on San Antonio.

Erin Sherrill and Camryn Bernhardt at the River Walk!

After the presentations we walked down the famous San Antonio River Walk! We were tricked by the counselors to walk down the river walk barefoot so we could get the entire river experience. After the River Walk, we had some free time in San Antonio!!

River Walk!

Ian Stines, Erin Sherrill, Baylee Willis, Allie Temple, and others stuck to the traditional Carolina route and went to Whatta-Burger. Nick Richard, Rylee Gaus, Kacie Barrett, Rylee Roller, Maddie Cabe, Abby Copeland, and Cam Ray met a waiter from Barriba Cantina named Thomas who helped them find food quickly and gave them water and free chips and queso!

A bird even pooped on Cameron Thomas today!!! (God Bless San Antonio)

After exploring for a while, we returned to the busses to drive to our stop for the night, Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas, which is in Kerr County…what a coincidence. On our way, we had our dinner of BLT’s on the bus with chips, another nice change up from the regular lunchmeat and cheese. The bus had quite a few spills but in the end it was a good dinner!!

When we arrived at Schreiner University we went into the gym to hear from a couple of current students named Sam and Daniel who told us about the college! Daniel plays soccer here and Sam plays tennis and they are both from Dallas, Texas! So cool!! After that was done, we learned about our jobs for the next few days and played basketball in the gym. Luckily, we get to sleep inside again tonight! WOOHOO!!

Shooting some hoops!!

Action shot!

Had a big group to pass the volleyball around! Taryn Jenkins is in the zone, looking for the ball! Cayla Gregory and Jenna Bright are right there with her!!

Some serious skills were used to be able to bounce the ball off of Tim Sellers' head, and with a boot on!!

Four Square match!!!

Four Square was also popular tonight, there was even a line waiting for when people got out!

Some locals hanging out at college! They say the deer come every day!

We had a sing-along and a talk about hiking the Grand Canyon and safety to finish off the night. For the next few days as we travel quite remotely, we may not have service so the blogs may not be up as consistently but never fear, they’ll get up eventually. There is no service out in West Texas and as we head into the desert, so don’t fret! We will not have service until Roswell, NM! That being said, this is the last night that the Bashful group is running the blog.  We loved being the first group to blog!! Peace out!
